Mapping the complexity of ecological models

چکیده

We propose to define the complexity of an ecological model as the statistical complexity of the output it produces. This allows for a direct comparison between data and model complexity. Working with univariate time series, we show that this measure ‘blindly’ discriminates among the different dynamical behaviours a model can exhibit. We then search a model parameter space in order to segment it into areas of different dynamical behaviour and calculate the maximum complexity a model can generate. Given a time series, and the problem of choosing among a number of ecological models to study it, we suggest that models whose maximum complexity is lower that the time series complexity should be disregarded because unable to reconstruct some of the structures contained in the data. Similar reasoning could be used to disregard models’ subdomains as well as areas of unnecessary high complexity. We suggest that model complexity so defined better captures the difficulty faced by a user in managing and understanding the behaviour of an ecological model than measures based on a model ‘size’.

Predictive Risk Mapping of Leptospirosis for North of Iran Using Pseudo-absences Data

Leptospirosis is a common zoonosis disease with a high prevalence in the world and is recognized as an important public health drawback in both developing and developed countries owing to epidemics and increasing prevalence. Because of the high diversity of hosts that are capable of carrying the causative agent, this disease has an expansive geographical reach. Various environmental and social ...

Comparing Discriminant Analysis, Ecological Niche Factor Analysis and Logistic Regression Methods for Geographic Distribution Modelling of Eurotia ceratoides (L.) C. A. Mey

Eurotia ceratoides (L.) C. A. Mey is an important plant species in semi-arid landsin Iran. New approaches are required to determine the distribution of this plant species. Forthis reason, geographical distributions of Eurotia ceratoides were assessed using threedifferent models including: Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA), Ecological Niche FactorAnalysis (ENFA) and Logistic Regression (LR). ...

The effects of Concept Mapping Strategy and Aural Vs. Written Prompts on Writing Test Performance Under Different Planning Conditions

This study examined the effects of aural and written prompts under two planning conditions (i.e. pre-task planning and no planning) on complexity, accuracy, and fluency of test takers' writing production. Forty learners in an English institute, who had already been classified as intermediate according to the Oxford Placement Test, were assigned to two planning conditions (i.e. no planning and p...

Ecological capability evaluation of Ghara-Ghach dam area to establish a tourism region

There are various methods and models for land evaluation. These methods are classified according to the number of used resources. The best resources capabilities or potentials and land use can be found by analyzing one of the main resources, in the lands close relations to ecologic resources exist. Soil has a great potential for introducing the studied region specifications. Hence, it cha...

Application of classification trees-J48 to model the presence of roach (Rutilus rutilus) in rivers

In the present study, classification trees (CTs-J48 algorithm) were used to study the occurrence of roach in rivers in Flanders (Belgium). The presence/absence of roach was modelled based on a set of river characteristics. The predictive performance of the CTs models was assessed based on the percentage of Correctly Classified Instances (CCI) and Cohen's kappa statistics. To find the best model...
